Table Clock "Pendule Mysterieuse"
France 1980-1985 (following the first model ca. 1930) Cartier, Paris
The case is symbolically shaped as a Buddhist temple gate with a large gong. The rock-crystal, faceted dial is surrounded by 12 laminas made ofmother ofpearl which are mounted on Vermail-silver. In between, there are 12 gilt-indices set with diamonds. The gold hands which appear to be floating in midair are also set with diamonds. The dial which is set in Vermail hangs on a gold mounting which is set with diamonds surrounding three ruby-cabochons. The gold mounting itselfis fastened by a support bracket ofVermail, chalcedony and mother ofpearl. The mounting rests on two pillars made of chalcedony, rock crystal and Vermail-armaments. The pillars are set each on square blocks of chalcedony. The rectangular base finally is made of mother of pearl and a massive plate ofVermail. A 331 ct. carved ruby Buddha thrones on the top flanked by two tourmaline-cabochons. A lid under the Buddha opens to the dock movement. The dial is made oftwo plates of rock crystal with each hand fixed to each plate. The secreted cog mechanism moves the two parallel discs so that the hands appear to rotate in a "mysterious way". In total 173 diamonds, 2 tourmalinecabochons, 3 ruby-cabochons and one ruby-Buddha were used for this table dock.
