Silhouette paper cuts
Our shop windows are currently decorated with huge silhouette paper cuts. These exquisite winter images are the work of Beatrice Straubhaar. The artist comes from the Saanenland region, where this traditional craft of cutting designs out of paper is of great significance.
The technique of paper-cutting originated in China and was first seen in Central Europe around 1600. In Switzerland, different styles have developed from one region to the next. Nowadays, the traditional designs depicting farm scenes have lost in popularity and are increasingly being superseded by modern-day themes or fairy-tale figures. Ongoing improvements in the quality of the paper also allow the silhouette shapes to be increasingly elaborate. Nevertheless, it is the extraordinary dexterity, great imagination and boundless inspiration that characterises the artists today.
