The Beyer Watch

The design of this watch emulates the giant timepiece that hangs outside the Beyer shop. It has served as a trademark for decades, and can be seen from a long way off on the Bahnhofstrasse.

Weltklasse Zürich – World-class Beyer

08/24/2017

As soon as the winners of the individual athletic disciplines at the Letzigrund Stadium are known, the mobile phone in Beyer’s watch workshop starts vibrating. Ernst Baschung immediately sets to work, carefully engraving the names of Ruth Jebet, the best in the women’s 3000 metres steeple, of Mo Farah, winner over 5,000 metres, or of the gold medallist in the supreme discipline of 100 metres, Chijindu Ujah. After the last SMS and last engraving, Ernst Baschung gets into his car and takes the plaques to the athletes’ hotel. Here they are mounted onto the trophies and the victorious athletes are presented with their personified “diamonds”.

Carlo Mutschler, head of the goldsmiths’ department, designed the diamond trophies that the 16 winners take home with them seven years ago. And they are still made by Beyer today. Carlo Mutschler regards it as a very special honour to sit in the stadium and witness how 25,000 spectators spur on the athletes to achieve top performances so that they can walk off with “his diamonds”.
