Sechseläuten on April 8, 2019

04/08/2019

Monday, April 8 is a public holiday in the City of Zurich and most of the businesses and shops, including Beyer, are closed. The Sechseläuten spring festival is traditionally held on the third weekend in April, with a colourful children’s parade on Sunday followed by the proper Sechseläuten parade on Monday. The festival culminates in the symbolic burning of the Böögg, a large effigy of a snowman prepared with fireworks, on an enormous bonfire. Thus Zurich bids farewell to the long, cold winter nights and looks forward to the warmer months of the year.

Other highlights of the festivities during the Sechseläuten weekend are the spectacular guilds’ parade and the night-time visits of the guilds to each other. The Beyer family have been members of the Zunft zur Schmiden (blacksmiths’ guild) for generations. In 1368, when the guild system was set up, there was no guild for clock- and watchmakers, and so they joined forces with the goldsmiths to found the Zunft zur Schmiden.
