1. Advent at the Clock Museum

Advent is more than just waiting. It is a time to pause, look back and look ahead. Every stroke, every ray of light and every movement of a clock remind us of what connects us through space and time. The history of time measurement is also the history of mankind: it ranges from the first sundials and precise mechanical masterpieces to the modern timepieces of our present day. This Advent season, we invite you to take a closer look at four fascinating objects from the Beyer Clock Museum

1. Advent
Light, the first hand of time.

Wooden shadow sticks (Northern Europe & India, ca. 3000 BC - 18th century)

Imagine the sun moving across the sky thousands of years before cogwheels moved time. Wooden sticks cast their shadows and mark the hours that man learnt to read. One bears runes from Scandinavia, the other inscriptions in Sanskrit, symbols of knowledge and culture from times long past. It was in this interplay of light and shadow that man discovered his first clock.
