The sound of time

01/19/2017

As early as in this 17th century, watchmakers set out to develop a mechanism that would make time audible when desired. Nowadays, an absolute master of this complication is Patek Philippe. The watches by the Genevan-based manufacture are not just extremely precise and beautifully formed, but also have a perfect sound.

In our Patek Boutique, Beyer guests listened to Anne-Gaëlle Ruch, watchmaker at Patek Philippe, as she eloquently explained the workings of the minute repeater. At the end of the presentation, guests had the opportunity to train their own ear and, based on the sound of the chime, determine what material the watch was made from and whether Patek Philippe’s traditional gongs or cathedral gongs were used to create the sound. Not an easy task! Philippe and Thierry Stern are true masters of the craft: not a single watch leaves the manufacture before either father or son has listened to and approved its chime.
